"Collective Memory Workshop" Class Lecture

In the summer of 1949, a group of exiled students from all over Shandong, from the north to the south, arrived at Penghu by boat from Guangzhou under the mediation of the chairman of Shandong Province,

the Ministry of Education, and the high-ranking people of Taiwan and Penghu, and were accepted by the Penghu Defense Command in a half-training, half-academic way.

However, on July 13th, there was an incident in which students were wounded by bayonets because of the forced military deployment, which was later called "Penghu 713 Incident".

Immediately after the incident, the defense of the right to education led to the "Bandit Spy Injustice Case", which resulted in the execution of seven teachers and students and the arrest of many others,

and was later called the "Shandong Exile Teachers' and Students' Cases", which was one of the most important cases of injustice during the White Terror period.

In 2023, Prof. Shan devoted a great deal of effort to the publication of "Shandong over Taiwan: A Collection of Autobiographies of Exiled Students and Husband and Wife",

which describes his and his parents' stories, with reference to a huge amount of information and interviews, and with more than two hundred notes added in detail, he puts the autobiographies of his and his wife's parents "in a wider context,

reflecting on the connection between the individual and the times, as well as on universal values, in order to highlight the uniqueness and universality" of the two books.

This is an extraordinary biography.

Prof. Te-Xing Shan is a leading scholar in China, who has been studying European and American ethnic literature and the issues of separation, trauma, memory, reproduction, otherness, and acceptance of otherness for many years.

In this lecture, he will be invited to share his profound thoughts on the preservation and reproduction of collective memory when reviewing and reflecting on the topic of Shandong students in exile,

which involves modern history, immigration history and family history.
