A Brief Introduction to the School of Science, Soochow University.

Based on the educational philosophy of developing a comprehensive university and in view of the importance of basic science education to scientific and technological advancement, the Department of Mathematics was established under the School of Arts and Sciences in 1969. The following year, the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry were established, while the Department of Mathematics, originally under the School of Arts and Sciences, was merged to form the School of Science at the Wai Shuang Hsi Campus. In 1974, the Stone Memorial Hall of the School of Science was inaugurated. In 1980, the Department of Microbiology was established, followed by the Master's program in Microbiology in 1988. In 1989, the Department of Psychology was established. In 1992, 1994, and 2001, the Master's programs in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Psychology were established accordinly, gradually forming the framework for science education. The School of Science upholds the principles of seeking logical truth, being pragmatic, and the attitude of active innovation to cultivate students with a cultural spirit, general knowledge of science, and the ability to explore scientific knowledge. In view of the ever-changing nature of global civilization, tertiary education development is becoming more internationalized and information-based, with teamwork being increasingly important. The University actively encourages professional exchanges and integration among our faculty to drive the vitality of academic research, thereby improving academic quality and benefitting society.
  • Educational Objectives: Cultivate students with rationale-seeking and analytical thinking habits, a solid foundation in scientific theory, the ability to integrate and apply science and technology, a broad vision, and strong academic ethics.
  • Core Competences: Basic scientific theories, analytical and practical techniques, and technical language skills.
  • Teaching and Research Focus:
    • The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical and practical application, with experiments and internships conducted in separate classes and groups.
    • Emphasis is placed on information technology and multimedia-assisted courses to improve teaching effectiveness.
    • Cultivate general scientific literacy, develop common courses for the School of Science, and form distinctive course features.
    • Continue to build strong relationships with off-campus clinical and counseling internship institutions to provide students with internship opportunities.
    • Emphasize and advocate for laboratory safety and environmental awareness.
    • Participate in various research projects funded by the National Science and Technology Council, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and various industry sectors, to encourage departments to promote international academic research.
In the future, we will continue to uphold the principles of seeking logical truth, being pragmatic, and the attitude of active innovation to cultivate students with a cultural spirit, general knowledge of science, and the ability to explore scientific knowledge, thereby improving academic quality and contributing to society.
