The Department of Business Administration was established in 1968. Founded in 1988, the Institute of Management Science enrolled graduate students and was merged with the Department of Business Administration in 1994. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program was set up in 2000. The Department at present admits 4 undergraduate classes, 1 graduate class, and 1 MBA class each year. In total, the number of students is almost 1,200. Sequentially, the administration of the Department is directed by Jie Lee, Jian-Fei Teng, Shih-Ruo Liu, Koong-lian Kao, Chia-Ling Cheng, Chih-Yu Fan, Hua-Sheng Yang, Tung-Bin Teng, Hsiao-Ling Shen, Chu-Ying Lin, Chung-Tzer Liu, Jinshyang Roan, Chau-Hung Wang, Jia-Chi Huang, and Rong-An Shang. The current Chairman is Kai-Chieh Chia. The Department has been active in recruiting excellent instructors, designing diversified courses, encouraging academic research, and upgrading teaching facilities. With these factors in place, students in the Department are offered a fruitful study environment.
The faculty is made up of 26 professors, associate professors, and assistant professors. Many of our faculties have practical experience in businesses as operators or consultants. Some of them, because of their outstanding research findings, also achieved a prestigious status in their academic field or in governmental offices. Moreover, the Department has invited more than 70 experts as adjunct instructors, many of whom are in charge of businesses, thus bringing the latest practices in business administration to the campus. All together they form a team of incomparable excellence. In the future, we are moving forward to recruit new faculty members, and hope to usher in brand-new concepts and knowledge on management.
For 45 years, since its establishment, the Department has cultivated more than 10,000 students, who have built up an increasingly close alumni system. In 1999, Soochow Management Academic Foundation was established to assist in the development of the Department with the support of the alumni.
Soochow University is an excellent private comprehensive university with the history of over a hundred years. With an ambition to stand out as a humanity-focused forward-looking teaching university, Soochow seeks to endow students with specialized and common knowledge, experience, courage, and appreciation to become talents of innovation and execution in society.
The objective of higher education aims to search for strategies that assist people in solving encountered problems. We believe that business organization is one of these effective methods. In addition to professional training, we also hope that business administration education will develop students’ real problem-solving abilities, macroscopic vision, and tendency to succeed in meeting the needs of the changing environment of the future. In order to achieve this ideal, we set up 4 educational objectives, hoping to cultivate T-typed managerial talents equipped both with width and expertise, to promote both theoretically and realistically practiced teaching and research. Through this method, we hope to emphasize the cultivation of students’ attitude and ability, and to broaden students’ global vision and diverse development.
Features of the program:
1. The staff consisted of more than 100 full-time and adjunct instructors all equipped with advanced teaching experience and professional knowledge in the academic field.
The Department has a teaching staff of varied and abundant expertise. Among the staff are many comprehensive experienced teachers who can fulfill the needs of theoretical and practical instructions at the same time allowing students’ wide basic knowledge and proficient competence to be equally developed. The Department at present is made up of 26 full-time instructors, among whom are 1 chair professor, 11 professors, 1 visiting professor, 7 associate professors, and 6 assistant professors. The number of adjunct instructors is about 70, including renowned experts in business field, such as Sush-Der Lee (Chairman, Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation), Guei-MinLee (Legislator), Tyzz-Jiun Duh (Deputy Minister, Ministry of Economic Affairs), Jhong-Ying Gu (Chairman, China Development Industrial Bank), Sun-Quae Lai (Chairman, China Shipbuilding Corporation), Simon C. Dzeng (Chairman, Bellwether International Group), etc. They are invited to enhance the integrated education of theories and practices.
On average, every school year, the Department invites at least 3 oversea scholars as visiting professors for one semester, including those from Western Connecticut State University, Zhejiang University, Nankai University, Shandong University, and the University of International Business and Economics. These professors have been invited to Taiwan and offer students the latest professional and academic knowledge, and the general scope of the business in other countries. Moreover, the Department also frequently invites many foreign scholars as guest speakers, whose speeches broaden students’ academic vision and global view.
2. The best courses are based on interdisciplinary learning, and the most compatible course designs are established to be diverse as well as professional.
As for course design, it emphasizes the education of basic theories for juniors and the integrated education for seniors so that students can combine and master the acquired administration theories and, through comprehensive consideration, face and deal with mutable and complicated problems. In addition, during classes, case studies are included as assisted learning. Through the process of discussion, students will have their skills trained in respect to organization, communication, and expression. They will also be cultivated with team spirit, which helps the morale of business administration concerning win-win situations to be put to use. Furthermore, the Department also set up varied education objectives and course designs according to the undergraduate, graduate, and MBA classes so as to fulfill students’ needs from different levels.
The special feature about the Department is that in order to encourage excellent undergraduate students to stay in the university for their further study in the graduate program at the Department, which hopefully achieves the goals of continuous study and shortened school years, the " Implementation Guidelines of Soochow University’s Undergraduate- Graduate study program in the Department of Business Administration（東吳大學企業管理學系學生修讀學、碩士一貫學程實施要點）was set up to grant students a chance to acquire both BA and MA degrees within 5 years so that they can enter the job market earlier and thus strengthen their competitiveness.
3. Over 11,000 excellent alumni form a perfect interpersonal network in the future career scene.
Since the establishment in 1969, the Department has cultivated more than 11,000 excellent alumni, who have secured positions as senior executives in many renowned domestic and foreign enterprises; many of whom are even entrepreneurs, professional managers, and award winners in national contests and inter school competitions. The outstanding performance of our brilliant alumni also represents the pride of the Department. The Department has been listed among the top-ranked by the mass media in the investigation into departments of business and management.
The present jobs of our Alumni include positions in renowned domestic and foreign enterprises. Many of them hold the position of senior executive in these companies. Some of them are entrepreneurs who have undertaken their own businesses and have achieved tremendous success. Not only does such a wide alumni network serve as an important guide for the juniors to develop their career, but their superb performances also serve as models for the students in school.
4. Over 27 foreign universities are collaborated for exchange student program, which offers a perfect opportunity to broaden study scope and global vision.
Students of the Department largely visit foreign universities as exchange students. These schools include Chongqing University, Fudan University, University of Groningen (Holland), Copenhagen Business School (Denark), Högskolan i Jönköping (The Kingdom of Sweden), Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Germany), Bond University (Australia), University of Miyazaki (Japan), Chuo University (Japan), Aichi University (Japan), Tohoku University (Japan), Université Lille Nord de France (France), Woosong University (Korea), Thunderbird School of Global Management (USA), Niigata University (Japan), and so on. Group E of the graduate class is an all-English international business administration program. This program requires all graduates to go abroad as exchange students for at least one semester, including Thunderbird School of Global Management (United States), IESEG School of Management (Université Catholique de Lille, (France), Tohoku University (Japan), Niigata University (Japan), Woosong University (South Korea), and so forth. In addition,, the Department is also visited by oversea exchange students, including those from The Central University of Finance and Economics, Nanjing University, Jilin University, Renmin University of China, Xiamen University, Tianjin University, SooChow University, Lanzhou University, Harbin Institute of Technology, National Sun Yat-sen University, and so on. These fruitful oversea exchange experiences are great opportunities for students to broaden their study field and global vision.
5. Plenty of industry-academic cooperation and real-practice forums offer abundant practical experiences and the last mile development.
Every year, instructors of the Department take charge of many research projects from the National Science Council. They also actively conduct academic-industry cooperation with the industry and the government, such as BaiYu Management and Consulting Inc.; BroVue Management Consulting Incorporated Company; Pxmart Co., Ltd.; Scania Taiwan; Hua-Gang Tea Ltd.; UTi Logistics Taiwan Company; Ever light Chemical Industrial Corporation; Institute for Information Industry; Institute of Transportation, Ministry of Transportation and Communications; Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of Transportation and Communications; Taipei City Public Transportation Office; The Landis Taipei Hotel; Corporate Synergy Development Center; . . . etc.
Specifically, the Department has cooperated with many enterprises to offer real practice related courses, including the real practice courses with DHL Express Taiwan; Ai Wang Technology Co., Ltd.; and PricewaterhouseCoopers Taiwan. CEO real practice seminars are also held to invite more than 10 business elites at president or higher position to address to students the present circumstances of business development practice. Besides, some companies offer students internship opportunities, such as APEX; Anderson group; Chailease Finance Co., Ltd., to improve the students’ understanding of business practice.
6. With regular international academic exchange activities, the direction of our academic research is able to comprehend the pulsation of global vision.
The Department regularly holds a conference entitled: "Conference on Interdisciplinary and Multifunctional Business Management.” For many years, the conference has attracted enthusiastic participation of academic and business fields in the country, accumulating rather abundant records. Its topics mainly emphasize the idea that business administration is an interdisciplinary field, so discussions focus on issues of multifunction and business administration. The conference has established high reputation through its review process, article quality, and stress on topics related to business field.
The Department also holds or assists to hold non-scheduled international academic exchange conferences. For example, in September, 2011 the Department took charge of the commissioned program from APEC Transportation Working Group to conduct the "The Last Mile of Supply Chain: Third Party Logistics Forum & Visit.” In 2012, the Supply Chain and Logistics Management Research Lab of the Department were entrusted by the Air Transport Research Society to conduct a Global Air Transport Forum. In 2013, the Department assisted to run an International Conference on the Challenges and Responses of Ports in a Globalized Economy, and the Asian Logistics Round Table (ALRT) conference.
Many instructors of the Department have been to overseecolleges as visiting scholars for lectures, visits, speeches, and exchanges, including Shandong University, the Central University of Finance and Economics, Nankai University, Harbin Institute of Technology, MBA School of Management in Harbin Institute of Technology, IOWA State University (USA), Purdue University(USA), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, ZheJiang University, Högskolan i Jönköping (the Kingdom of Sweden), FuzShou University, INHA University (Korea), SooChow University, . . . etc.
In order to expand the academic development of the Department and to be geared to international standards, the Department will continue participating actively in international academic cooperation, deepening exchanges with foreign colleges, and promoting academic research energy.
A. Education: to upgrade teaching proficiency and diversify course designs
1. Dividing groups by administration fields, conducting course designs, coordinating course subjects, and recommending the recruitment of the teaching staff.
2. In view of course requirement, recruiting field-related staff members, enhancing effects of teaching innovation and modernization.
3. Offering instructors good teaching and research environment.
B. Research: to enrich research resources, and to improve teaching quality and research competence.

C. Consultation: putting the student counseling system into practice and to strengthen the communication among the alumni
1. Working on the system of two-year homeroom teaching, strengthening the function of counseling assistants to improve the mutual understanding of teachers and students.
2. Through the alumni foundation, granting scholarships to students excellent in character and learning, and subsidies to those in strained family circumstances in order to encourage or assist students to study.
3. Encouraging the student association of the Department to arrange visits to domestic representative enterprises to have further understanding of the business.
4. Encouraging the Student Association of the Department to invite the alumni, or the instructors and seniors in campus, to the seminars to lend their social experiences to the students.
D. Continuing education: to participate actively in continuing education and cooperation with the industry
1. Conducting credit classes of graduate program for continuing education, promoting enrollment, and diversifying courses.
