Adhering to "Understanding and Serving Society” motto, the late Professor Martin M. C. Yang founded the Department of Sociology at Soochow University Waishuanghsi Campus, in 1973. Our program curriculum in sociological theories and social work became available in 1978 and the Social Work Program established its own department in 1990. In 1981, to enhance sociology education, we established the Graduate Institute of Sociology, which was subsequently renamed the Master Program of Sociology. The executive master program was inaugurated in 2001, to provide continuing studies for mid-career professionals. Currently, the department offers two undergraduate classes, one master program, and one executive master program . Prof. Martin M. C. Yang promoted the University Experimental Community: Linshi Community as a Social Laboratory project, establishing teaching and research orientation that equally emphasized theory and practice. By striving for over 40 years, the department has maintained the traditional practice of social investigation and community orientations. Using Shilin District (Taipei City) as a base, plentiful research findings were obtained by applying various social research methods and the geographic information system (GIS). The department founded the Center for Central and Eastern European Studies (CCEES) in October 2008 to extend local community research to comparative "regional studies.” Since 2012, faculty and students have been conducting long-term New Generation Studies, which provides students with opportunities to be involved in active experiments and continue strengthening teaching, research, and social practice activities. As successors to Prof. Yang, the Department Chair of Sociology has been held by Prof. Shou-Jung Yang, Prof. James C. Hsu, Prof. Peter Chao, Prof. Ming-Che Tsai, Associate Prof. Chia-Ming Chang, Associate Prof. Hsing-Kuang Chao, Associate Prof. Sue-Wen Lean, Associate Prof. Cheng-Chun Lu, Prof. Chia-Ming Chang, and Associate Prof. Ming-Yeh Wu. Prof. C. S. Stone Shih has been managing departmental affairs since August 2015. Contact Information
