Graduation Standards of English Ability

  1. The standards are made according to Article 49 Paragraph 3 "Bachelor students enrolled in 2008 or after must pass the equivalent to level B1 in CEF Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or pass Soochow University English Proficiency Test and comply with the regulation on Paragraph 1 within the extended study years before they can be approved for graduation. Failing to pass the English level needed, students should take relevant English remedial courses before they are allowed to graduate. If the departments have a higher standards or additional rules, they must be followed.” As defined on the University Regulations of our university.
  2. Soochow University bachelor tudents’ graduation standards of English ability are as follows:

Additional Requirements

1. Students from the departments that set higher standards than the  general required graduation standards.

Earn credits for Foreign Language I and II.

Follow the regulations decided by the department.

2. Students who study other foreign language except for English (meeting the following condition and choosing to study foreign language I and II):

a. Freshmen who submit the GEPT Intermediate preliminary test certificate.

b. Freshmen who have top mark on English in General Scholastic Ability Test.

c. Freshmen who have top mark on English in Advanced Subjects Test.)

Earn the credits of Foreign Language I and II.

Pass the equivalent to CEF –B1 or SCUEPT.

Earn the credits of Reinforcement English I (2/0) and II (0/2).

3. Other students

(Students are required to study English I & II or meet the above second condition, but still study English I & II.)

Earn credits of English language I and II.

Pass the equivalent to CEF –B1 or SCUEPT.

Earn credits of Reinforcement English I (2/0) and II (0/2).

3. Relevant regulations of the graduation standards of English ability are as followings:

(1) Follow the department regulations if the department sets up a standards higher than the standard equivalent to CEF-B1 or has additional requirements.

(2) Students at School of Foreign Language and Cultures must not study the first and second year foreign language courses as their major.

(3) Students who study English or Foreign Language I & II can book for Soochow University English Proficiency Test according to the timetable published by Office of Academic Affairs by the end of the second semester while studying for English or Foreign Language II.

Students who fail to pass SCUEPT can register for the test within the study years until they pass the graduation standards. They can also choose to pass the equivalent to CEF-B1 or earn credits of Reinforcement English I & II as the additional condition to reach graduation standards.

(4) Students who choose to pass the equivalent to CEF-B1 as the graduation standard should submit the original certificate to the department within the extended study years to apply for verification. If the test that is the equivalent to CEF-B1 has both a preliminary test and a second test, both tests must be passed.

(5) Student who choose to earn credits of Reinforcement I & II as the additional condition of graduation standards can stop taking the language course on the next semester under the premise of meeting the requirements for course-selecting in our university if they pass the test equivalent to CEF-B1 or SCUEPT and are verified by the department.

(6) The credits that students earn from the additional condition, the Reinforcement English I & II courses will not be calculated into graduation credits (freshmen who enrolled the university  in 2008 and 2009 will have the credits being calculated into graduation credits).

(7) Students who transfer their major or have double majors will be applicable to the graduation standards of their original departments.

4. The standards for tests that are the equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEF B1 are as follows:
