Department Introduction

Department of computer science was established in the School of Business in 1972,and has become the first department in Taiwan to emphasize on the application of  information technology in business management. In 1981, it was expanded to two classes to meet the increasing demand of computer professionals. It was renamed as Department of Information Science in 1994 to respond the academic trend and social demand. In 1999, the establishment of Master’s program was to provide comprehensive learning environment to students. In 2000, the Executive Master’s program was added. To respond to the prosperity of domestic education resources, upgrade development of industries and globalization, and integration strengthening in business field, we were renamed the Department of Information Management in 2008 hoping that complementary synergy between departments in School of Business and advantages from technology integration can be achieved.  

 

There are 20 full-time faculty members who make up 8 professors, 7 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, and 2 lecturers. In addition to that, we have 7 full-time assistants, 2 departmental secretaries, and 3 technicians. There are 2 classes in the undergraduate program, which has an annual enrollment of more than 110 students. The enrollment of the general Master’s program and the Executive Master’s program each year is more than 20 students each. As for our teaching equipment, we have multi-functional research offices, professional computer lab of information management specifically for students in this department only, a certification counseling office, a computer lab for project experiment and general use, and 3 labs for graduate students (only for those in e-business), a network and database application lab, as well as multimedia and mobile application labs.

 

Our integrated curriculum plan is designed to cultivate professionals with research, development, management, and integration ability, and allow information systems cooperate with our featured development in the future. In addition, to the consideration of our features, teaching objectives, and specialty of faculty members; our curriculum design balances between theory of business management and practice of information systems, which not only keeps the advantage in execution originally from Department of Information Science, but also strengthens information management professionals’ knowledge of business management to meet the target of cultivation for business needs.

 

History

Since created by Professor Jwe-Son, Kuo in 1972, our department has built a considerable team of faculty members as well as computer software and hardware equipment through the joint effort of each chairman, faculty member, and student for the last 4 decades. In 1999, the Master’s program was permitted for enrollment by Ministry of Education to provide comprehensive learning environment to students. The Executive Master’s program was established in 2000 and 5-year undergraduate-graduate curriculums in 2002 made students accelerate their study pace to achieve their Bachelor’s and Master’s sooner in accordance with their own ability.

 

Currently, under the leadership of Professor Yu-Chen, Kuo, we will continue to aggressively integrate various resources and improve research results from teachers and students based on the balanced principle of theory and practice, which we hope will bring us to a new milestone.

 

Objective and Direction for Development

In order to build a comprehensive environment for teaching and research and develop the theory and techniques relevant to information management, to respond to the objective of meeting the demand of information management professionals from organization and society, we have set the cultivation of information management professionals to enhance organization competitiveness as our objective.

 

We will focus on three areas: e-business, network and database application and multimedia and mobile application. The e-business plan is to respond to the trend of information technology development, globalization and digital business management based on the specialty of our current faculty members. The network and database application plan is an innovative application of development in network and database from information technology under the leverage of network and database techniques from current faculty members. Lastly, the multimedia and mobile application plan is to provide a core platform for them, as well as digital content and management, to accelerate their growth engine when taking advantage of the techniques of communication, multimedia, and digital learning from current faculty members.
