What will I learn as a Psychology Major?
You will learn a lot of different ideas, theories and skills as a psychology major at Soochow University. Our department has a strong foundation in scientific and research methodologies with an emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving skills. Overview Psychology as a scientific discipline aims to describe, understand, and predict the behavior of living organisms. In doing so, psychology embraces the many factors that influence behavior - from sensory experience to complex cognition, from the role of genetics to that of social and cultural environments, from the processes that explain behavior in early childhood to those that operate in older ages, and from normal development to pathological conditions. Research Emphasis
In Cognitive Science our faculty explores learning across the lifespan and reading; cognition in judgment and decision making, neuroeconomics; cognition in emotion, perception and human factor, memory and language comprehension. In Social-Personality Psychology our faculty explores a wide range interests, including family and gender psychology, qualitative methodology, social and applied psychology. In Child Development, we have faculty explores interested in child count ability in early mathematics learning, and in the role of motivation in learning. In Quantitative Methodology and Measurement, faculty research interests span a wide range, including developing new psychological tests and scales, improving educational assessments, human drawing evaluation and web-learning. In Clinical Psychology our faculties explore a range of topics related to abnormal psychology, psychological pathology and assessment, emotion therapy, children health and well-being across the lifespan. In counseling Psychology our faculty explores interests of family therapy, group dynamic In Industrial/Organizational Psychology, our faculties explore interests, including human resources, consumer psychology, and user experiences.
Undergraduate Studies
The undergraduate Psychology major at the Soochow University offers students a broadly based introduction to human behavior based on a curriculum that emphasizes current research and theory. Undergraduates will earn a Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) degree in psychology. The Psychology Undergraduates Program provides students with a breadth and depth in the study of human behavior. It is designed to teach in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of psychology research findings and the methods by which psychological knowledge is acquired. Students majoring in Psychology will take a minimum of 128 units of courses (78 required and 50 selected).
Graduate Studies
Graduate students working toward the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Psychology at the Soochow University has core strength in three areas: Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Our Psychology Graduate Program training combines broad methodological approaches and special professional knowledge and training.
Resources
The Department offers specialized laboratory and equipment for our various research and teaching approaches, such as, Cognition and Neuroeconomics Laboratory, Reading Psychology Laboratory, Psychometrics laboratory, Personality and Social Psychology Laboratory, Social Interaction Laboratory, Developmental Psychology Laboratory, Child Psychological Assessment and Therapy Room, Anxiety and Depression Laboratory, EEG laboratory, rTMS laboratory along with other small size instruments like noise meter, light meter, and fatigue tester, are all specifically designed for lectures and research use.
Other than those research laboratories, we have space like conference rooms, seminar rooms, psychological experiment laboratory, computer rooms, and counseling interview rooms for lecture and research purposes. Students also have their own space like student union office and graduate student study room. Moreover, professors and students can cooperate with institute outside school and hospital for large scale and rare equipment in their research and study.
