Soochow University, founded in 1900 in Suzhou, was the first western-style university in China. After the government of the Republic of China moved to Taiwan, some of its former alumni exerted tireless efforts to reestablish their alma mater in Taipei. In 1951, a board of directors was created and premises were rented on Hankou Street in downtown Taipei to set up the so-called Soochow Preparatory School. After the Ministry of Education approved the reestablishment plan at 02 About the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences the end of 1954, the School of Law was the first to be established, which included the Departments of Law, Political Science, Economics, and Accounting, along with an attached Foreign Languages and Literature Department. The school became the first private university in Taiwan. In 1968, School of Literature was established and has continued to expand and develop under the exceptional leadership of its ten prior deans. In 2006, the School of Literature renamed to the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences to meet the mission and reality of teaching and research of all departments in the school. The mission of the school is to cultivate humanitarian and cultural interests and practice social awareness and care. The school currently consists of the Department of Chinese Literature (incl. master’s and doctoral stud - ies), Department of History (incl. master’s studies), Department of Philosophy (incl. master’s studies), Department of Political Science (incl. master’s and doctoral stud - ies), Department of Sociology (incl. master’s studies), Department of Social Work (incl. master’s stud - ies), Department of Music (incl. master’s studies), the Center for Teacher Education, Program of Human Rights (incl. master’s pro - gram), Program of Creative Cultural Industries (PCCI), and Program of Non-Profit Organizational Manage - ment, and English Program for East Asian Humanities and Social Sciences Study, as well as five aca - demic research centers: Center for GIS, Modernization and Innovation Center for Chinese Civilization, China Study Center, Center for East Asia Study, Center for Applied Arti - ficial Intelligence.

 Common features of the school’s teachings and research are as follows:

  1. A collaboration between both faculty and students, cultivating a full and healthy education of moral integrity, building an academic community that excels in cultural and social research.
  2. Joint research, education and communication on the subject of ‘humans and society’, which is closely related to civilization from classic to modern times.
  3. Focus on technological integration, using cross-areal collaborations to conduct educational and research activities.
  4. Establish and utilize education resources and research platform, for example, hold annual conference for faculty and students to present their research findings. All academic research centers hold specialized seminars, workshops, forums for faculty and students. Furthermore, to developing students' skills for tomorrow's challenges and aptitudes for the future job market, the school provide 16 transdisciplinary Program to encourages transdisciplinary learnings.
