Brief Description: Biotechnology is one of the main industry technologies in 21stcentury. Human beings have had experiences in the use of biological processes for a long time. For example, alcoholic beverages, yogurt drinks, monosodium glutamate, and antibiotics are manufactured by fermentation technology and flowers (e.g. Aphrodita Moth Orchid), food, or agriculture products are application results of biotechnology improvement. In theory, biotechnology is a science technology which uses biological processes and biological cells or their metabolites to manufacture products, improve variety and innovate, prevent and treat diseases, improve life quality of human beings, and maintain the environment and ecology. It is not only a comprehensive inter-disciplinary science but also a fundamental tool for life science, medicine, agricultural science, and biological engineering research. Biotechnology applies to industries such as the agricultural, food, pharmaceutical, medical, healthcare, specialty chemical, environmental, energy, and marine industries. It is the other industry technology revolution after petrochemical, aerospace, nuclear power, and information and electronic technology. Faced with the high technology era of the 21st century, the main content of this course is how to use biotechnology in environmental risk assessment and risk management.

It is a science to study chemical phenomenon in the environment. This course will be taught in unitswith precious video footage about pollution control techniques to improve teaching effectiveness and make students further understand environmental protection.

Course: Ecology and Biodiversity

Brief Description: Ecology discusses the interaction between organisms and their environment. Due to the scope is broad with much knowledge involved, many branches of subject can be derived from it. In addition, those knowledge are close to human lives, therefore, ecology has become necessary fundamental knowledge.

Many human activities such as looking for new habitats, acquiring more food, and consuming more resources made us witness the disappearance of many species. The reason that they disappeared is not due to natural selection but human exploitation. Many archeological evidences show that there is a close relationship between environmental change and organism survival. We should not arbitrarily plunder and destroy nature as before. Therefore, how to keep biodiversity has become an important issue in recent years.

In recent decades, people are paying moreattention to the issues of "the impact pesticides on food chain” and "the change of global biodiversity due to the destroyingof habitats”. In addition to global warming, which causes more intense climate change for the last five years, impact of this kind of change is more serious. People shall start to learn to peacefully co-exist with nature from ancestors to deal with those unbalanced environmentsin the future.

This course introduces the theory and method of ecology and biodiversity with video to improve students’ experiences on the meaning of them hoping that students will pay more attention and contribution to the issues about them.

Course: The Sociology of Consumption

Brief Description: The sociology of consumption always keeps keen observation and analysis capability for modern society. The theoretical point of view it raised such as taste study of French sociologist P. Bourdieu, new means of consumption of US sociologist G. Ritzer, and experience consumption of German sociologist G. Schulze has become an essential analysis tool for researchers to further grasp the society development feature of modern capitalism.

The sociology of consumption is not only more and more regarded by academics but also emphasized by industries such as brand management, marketing, and product design. Those who would like to engage in brand marketing or creative work must have fundamental training of the sociology of consumption.
